A word to the wise:
At the start of January 2003, the residence halls were placed on their own network (ResNet). Like all connections to the Internet, the ResNet bandwidth is a finite amount that is shared among the users. Data transfer rates can be slowed substantially by only a few users who abuse the network by excessive use of programs that require large amounts of bandwidth. Over the last several years a number of "peer-to-peer" (p2p) programs have appeared that allow users to participate in a file sharing community. These programs allow users to search the Internet for files that may interest them, and download those files to their own computers.

It is the policy of Florida State University to respect copyrighted material and to terminate all copyright violations. Any computer found violating these policies or contributing to the detriment of the network will be banned from on-line access. The computer will have to be cleaned of all software that has compromised its security. This includes but is not limited to: Viruses, spy-ware, malicious programs, file sharing, and/or p2p software.

Additional information about Copyright Policy at FSU is available from the Office of The Inspector General.
